SAMSUNG releases Multi-layer Ceramic Chip Capacitor library for nexxim and Ansoft designer
SEOUL, Korea--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ansoft Corporation (NASDAQ:ANST) and SAMSUNG (Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co. Ltd.) today announced the release of a new model library of SAMSUNG's high-density, miniaturized surface-mount Multilayer Ceramic Chip Capacitors (MLCC). MLCCs are used for decoupling and temperature compensation in applications where PC board space is limited. They are ideal for new wireless and portable product designs, including notebook computers, mobile phones, PDAs, camcorders, VCRs, telecommunications and test equipment. The new MLCC library allows engineers using Nexxim? and Ansoft Designer? to simulate advanced PCB and hybrid IC designs.

“The rapid advancement of mobile communications and small electronics products is driving demand for parts with ever-higher precision. For example, the slimmer mobile phones currently leading the market are forcing component manufacturers to develop ultra-small parts with very high capacity,” said Kangheon Hur, vice president of SAMSUNG. “We are pleased to team with Ansoft to address customer needs for accurate simulation and manufacturing data so that these high-performance components can be readily incorporated into the next generation of products.”

The MLCC components provide outstanding high-frequency properties, high reliability, low cost and ultra-small size. The new library contains over 400 capacitor models ranging in capacitance values from .5? to 47? for use with operating voltages up to 50V depending on chip size (available chip sizes range from 0201 to 1206). Each component model utilizes S-parameter data from actual device characterization to provide excellent accuracy of the capacitor’s electrical response within a Nexxim simulation. Nexxim is able to use the frequency-domain models provided by the S-parameters in both frequency-and time-domain analyses.

The library is available from SAMSUNG’s Web site (http://www.sem.samsung.com) and is easy to download (under Products/Capacitors-MLCC/Technical Tool) and configure for use within Nexxim and Ansoft Designer. This site provides Ansoft customers with the ability to search for components by name, performance data or other specification. SAMSUNG will maintain model support and upgrades, while Ansoft will address all customer support for Nexxim and Ansoft Designer.

01005(0.4mm x 0.2 mm) Cu MLCC?
It is the smallest and lightest product : it’s size is 01005(0.4 X 0.2mm), tiny as a grain of sesame and similar to hair and weight is 90?. Cu, one of the most reasonable price and good conductivity with electronics is used for internal electrode.

Semco’s 01005 MLCC is a highly valuable product and expected to be the best and suitable for the rapid development of mobile communication and small size electronic equipment.

0201 MLCC mainly used for electronic equipment will be replaced with much smaller size 01005, especially RF(Radio Frequency) module such as PAM(Power Amplifier Module).

Semco is now providing RF module suppliers with samples and is planning to release a finished product ensuring mass production quality as of 2007.1Q.

New product MLCC for LCD Display
They said on Jun 6th, the best performance MLCC which is 1210(width 3.2mm, length 2.5mm, thickness 1.8mm) of size, 10? of capacitance and 35V of rated voltage is developed.

It has the same capacitance as existing 1210 products but is much thinner by 30%(2.5mm→1.8mm) and higher by 40%(2.5mm→1.8mm).

In addition, 59% smaller products with the same performance 10? 25V is also developed : 1210(3.2/2.5/2.5) → 1206(3.2/1.6/1.6).

It is, reportedly, available for the range of -55~125℃(X7R) and expected to be alternated for X5R -55~ 85℃. MLCC’s trends are X7R(-55~125℃) ensuring high temp. reliability, slim and higher rated voltage according to the generation of heat caused by thin and large size flat display such as LCD.

Smaller and higher cap MLCC is initially required for much smaller electronic equipment but now thinner and higher rated voltage and better high temp reliability are another trend of MLCC’s development.

LCR development vice president Kang-heon Hur said, “Semco’s MLCC team has been accelerating the development for the 3 major markets : flat display, cell phone, note PC, etc.” and “we are also planning to full line up MLCCs for flat display developing the best 0603 and 0805 MLCC.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics will provide samples to LCD panel suppliers as of 06.3Q and from 4Q produce in Suwon factory.

0805 X5R 47uF MLCC Now Available
Samsung Electro-Mechanics (Samsung) has completed development of an MLCC with the highest capacitance, 47м in a 0805 case size with an X5R dielectric (-55∩ to 85∩, capacitance change 【15%).The device features outstanding capacitance stability against DC bias voltage, and the breakdown voltage is high.? Other MLCCs having this capacity come in a 1206 case, while Samsung has managed to reduce the size by about 40%, and company officials are confident that the product will quickly replace 47м in a 1206 case size.

Highly Reliable Mid-/High-voltage MLCCs
Samsung Electro-Mechanics (Samsung) has completed development and is now mass-producing mid-to-high voltage MLCCs ensuring high reliability with leading technology for powder composition of X7R and COG temperature 2kV 2.2nF MLCCs in 1206 case sizes, which are smaller than those of competitors (1210 size) for these same specifications. At the same time, Samsung’s devices feature higher capacitance than those of its competitors.

0402 MLCCs in Mass Production?
Samsung Electro-Mechanics (Samsung) has started to mass-produce the world’s smallest and lightest MLCC—a case size of 01005 (0402). It measures 0.4mm long by 0.2mm wide, so small that its shape is not readily discernable with the naked eye. It has a COG of 10pF or lower and weighs 90 micrograms. The overall size is only one-third that of the mainstream MLCC in the class—a 0201 (0603, which is 0.66mm wide by 0.3mm long). Samsung Electro-Mechanics (Samsung) has started to mass-produce the world’ s smallest and lightest MLCC—a case size of 01005 (0402).

Samsung Offers 100, X5R MLCC in 1210 Size
Samsung Electro-Mechanics has been intent on developing smaller, higher-capacity multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) to accommodate the electronic industrys trend towards convergence, multiple functions, smaller products, higher frequencies, digitization, and wireless connectivity.

Samsung is currently producing MLCCs with a capacitance range of 10-22? and has completed development of a 100? model.? The companys production capacity for high-capacity (300 layers or more) models has also been increased to 300 million units a month.Samsungs latest MLCC lineup includes 0402 Size 1? (6.3V), 0603 Size 1? (16V), 0805 Size 10? (6.3V), 1206 Size 22? (6.3V), and 1210 Size 100? (6.3V) devices.This R&D project has increased the available capacitance range and secured the core technologies of ultra thin film sheet production. Commercialization efforts are now underway.

Usually, tantalum capacitors with a range of 10-100? are used for the smoothing circuit in power supplies and IC decoupling. However, MLCCs with this much capacitance feature a frequency equivalent serial resistance (ESR), that is low, for better decoupling and smoothing performance as well as a more stable frequency than that of a tantalum capacitor. Therefore, MLCCs are now becoming the device of choice for this application.

High-capacitance MLCCs are used in diverse digital electronic products, but the leading application is still the decoupling of CPU in desktop and notebook PCs. They ensure a stable power supply, especially as clock speeds continue to accelerate. At the same time, smaller, slimmer and higher-capacity MLCCs will continue to be developed for camera phones, digital cameras and camcorders as well as slimmer, smaller hard drives and liquid crystal displays.

0805 X6S 10μF with Better DC Bias Performance
Samsung Electro-Mechanics has completed development of a 0805 X6S 10レF MLCC with a very small fall-off in capacitance induced by DC bias voltage. The capacitance value of an MLCC is inversely proportional to the thickness of the dielectric layer. This requires the layers to be thinner as the case size is reduced and the capacitance is increased. However, since the electric field strength per each dielectric layer gets inversely proportional to the dielectric thickness, thinner dielectric layered MLCCs experience stronger electric field.
